Marilla Cuthbert and her brother, Matthew, decide to adopt an orphan boy to help them on their farm. When Matthew goes to the train station to bring the boy home, 11-year-old Anne Shirley is waiting for him instead. Anne is happy to have finally left the orphanage and become part of a real family. Matthew doesn’t have the heart to tell her there has been a mistake and send her back. So, Anne, with her smiling freckled face and nonstop chatter, arrives at Green Gables. There she meets the amazed Marilla, and the Cuthberts’ lives are never the same again.
